E-Rate Program
The E-rate program, otherwise known as the Schools and Libraries Universal Service Support Mechanism, is the single largest funding source for educational technology in U.S. history, with more than $2.25 billion worth of discounts available each year on the purchase of telecommunications services, Internet access, and networking equipment and maintenance.
Facts:
-
The Schools and Libraries Division (SLD) of USAC (Universal Service Administrative Company) administers the E-rate program under the guidance of the Federal Communications Commission.
-
Vast majority of K-12 public and private schools and libraries in the U.S. now make technology purchases through the program.
-
Discounts range from 20 to 90 percent and vary based on economic level and location (Rural/Urban)
-
Ever eligible applicant who correctly completes an application can qualify for some funding, as long as funds are available.
Even if a school district is relatively wealthy, it will often contract for E-rate-eligible services according to the rules of the program in the event it qualifies for support. Most of the contracting activity under the E-rate program is concentrated within a few months of the year, culminating in the application deadline, which in recent years has fallen in February.
