VoIP To Create a Distributed Architecture

As the Healthcare industry addresses new challenges, significant opportunities for IT growth are created. Annese delivered a fully functional Cisco Unified Communications solution after assessing the challenges Roswell Park was
facing. The Institute implemented a highly scalable and distributed architecture with load balancing and high availability. This VoIP solution addressed the Institute’s e911 concerns while integrating with the legacy Nortel phone system that was used in their network infrastructure.

Project Highlights:

  • Cisco Unified Communications Manager (UCM) provides a scalable,
distributable, and highly available enterprise IP telephony call-processing solution
  • Two UCM servers are clustered and managed as a single entity. The UCM clustering yields scalability up to 30,000 IP phones (per cluster,) load balancing, and call-processing service redundancy
  • Call Admission Control (CAC) ensures that voice quality of service (QoS) is maintained across WAN links, and automatically diverts calls to alternate public switched telephone network (PSTN) routes when the WAN bandwidth is not available. A webbased interface to the configuration database enables the remote device and system configuration. HTML-based online help is available for users and administrators
  • One Cisco Unified Communications Manager Group (UCMG) was
implemented for two UCM Servers, and can expand for a third UCM. The group contains a primary (Publisher) UCM, as well as a backup (Subscriber) UCM.

Upon completion of the VoIP solution implementation, preparation for application building began. Currently, Annese and Roswell are assessing a Cisco IPT solution to migrate the existing Nortel/Symposium based Call
Center to Cisco UCCX /QM/ WFM.

Technology and Applications:

The Cisco Connected Health vision, scalable on a VoIP infrastructure, is based on securely sharing information on an intelligent Medical-Grade Network. Healthcare stakeholders at the center of responsive networks of knowledge, service, trust and accountability can share a variety of data – from patient
records to radiology results, bed availability, and billing details.
